Vincent Markowski:
Dirty Capsules

It’s been two years since Vincent Markowski’s first single The Madness Of Moths was released on DC Recordings. If you believe the mythology that Markowski has created around himself then his absence has been spent enjoying his celebrity Lepidopterist (moth expert) status, and using it to procure a means to launch himself into orbit, from where he has transmitted these two latest musical compositions. Of course this is nonsense; Markowski is an alias for another DC artist, Tom Tyler, a producer of much more down-tempo music than his Polish alias.

The mythology may be nonsense, but it really does enrich the music. The sleeve of “Dirty Capsules” demonstrates a kind of retro-futurism which seeps into the music - listening to B-side “The Number Arkiv” I am firmly of the opinion that if house music had come from the Eastern Bloc in the 1950s, this is probably what it would have sounded like. In Markowski, Tyler has created a figure that brings new meaning to the term “cosmic disco”.

“Dirty Capsules” is the real killer though - if you’ve heard “The Madness Of Moths”, then you’ll know what to expect - thick analog bass, spectral atmospherics and snatches of mad AM radio ramblings which are held together by a crisp drums and a relentless pace. I’ve been clamouring for more Markowski since I heard his debut, and this single does not disappoint. If the promised album hits this year then it will be the DC Recordings moment of 2009.
