Downtown Party Network:
Days Like These
Eskimo Recordings’ latest signing, Downtown Party Network, are a duo from Lithuania, which may not be the most obvious melting pot for balearic disco, but judging by this release, Eskimo could have found themselves a goldmine.
Downtown Party Network obviously like to take their time with things; their two tracks seem to be all about one moment - the hands in the air moment. Following a lengthy two minute breakdown comprised of shimmering string pads which climb slowly to a peak, “Into Your Face” finally takes off five and a half minutes after it begins, a gamble which pays off, packing more euphoria into the one minute which follows than some producers manage in a whole track.
“Days Like These” performs a similar trick, silencing its arpeggiated bassline for warm pads and a delayed piano, slowly bringing the groove back in over nearly two minutes with congas, airy atmospherics and handclaps before dropping back in with disco guitars and violins.
Both tracks verge dangerously close to cheese, but that’s something that should probably be applauded; sometimes when you’re dancing you need a moment to breathe, although I can’t help but think that’s something that these tracks would achieve only if they didn’t leave you feeling so breathless.
