Automotion
Hatchback is Sam Grawe, part of a West Coast nu-balearic axis that includes Sorcerer, and Windsurf (which is a combination of Hatchback and Sorcerer), all of which are currently flying the US flag for all things downtempo. He’s just released his debut album on Lo Recordings, after releasing the brilliant “White Diamond” on Thisisnotanexit last year (which includes an epic 17 minutes Prins Thomas remix - well worth buying). It feels very much like a road album, but rather than evoking the feeling of driving through the desert, you can imagine the Pacific Ocean stretching out on the right hand side of you as you drive the endless highway towards the south. Each of the tracks takes you on a journey of their own, none more so than this track.
Hatchback - The Lotus And The Robot
The name of the track kind of sums up Hatchback’s sound, in which radiophonic synths meet with the sounds of nature and West Coast harmonies. The album is capped off with the standout 16 minute long “Horizon”, an ambient beatless odyssey that proves Grawe’s incredible compositional ability.
If the winter blues are starting to kick in, you could do worse than to check it out. Buy it here, and if you want more, Discobelle have a Windsurf remix of The Tough Alliance’s “Neo Violence” here, which was foolishly rejected by the band for release, get it while you can.

Hello Scott. I like this A LOT. It sounds like the kind of disco that eno and byrne would be making if they were making disco circa my life in a bush of ghosts.
